Eight year old, Roxy Getter, from Punta Gorda, Florida, has become the youngest female to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

Roxy reached the summit of Kilimanjaro with her family – mom, Sarah, dad, Bobby, and 10-year old brother, Ben.

UPDATE: In March 2018, 7-year-old Montannah Kenney from Austin, Texas set a new world record as the youngest female to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro, breaking Roxy Getter’s record. Read more here.

Her feat is especially impressive as Roxy had significant heart problems at birth. She had open heart surgery at the age of 1! According to the website, All The Moms, Ben also has a heart condition, so the the summit attempt was approached with extreme caution by their parents.

It is not clear what route the family took, but according to reports the entire family summited at 6am on the July, 11th 2017.

Roxy is quoted as saying: ‘I didn’t think I would make it to the top, but I did.’

With the successful summit under her belt Roxy is now officially the youngest female to climb Kilimanjaro. The youngest person to climb Kilimanjaro is Keats Boyd, a Los Angeles resident who scaled the summit in 2008 at the age of 7 years old.

Roxy joins a long line of female record holders. Just last month (June 2017), a group of professional and semi-professional female football players scaled Mount Kilimanjaro before proceeding to play a full 90-minute game of football in Kilimanjaro’s crater (5,600m). The event has officially been recognised as the highest game of football in the World.

The oldest person to climb Kilimanjaro is also a women. Russian born, Angela Vorobeva, reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in October 2015 at the ripe old age of 86 years 267 days.

The mountain has also seen numerous speed record attempts, with the current holder, Karl Egloff, reaching the top of the summit and back to the trailhead gate in 6 hours 42 minutes. The fastest female ascent is held by German high endurance runner, Anne-Marie Flammersfeld, who took 8 hours and 32 minutes to reach the top and a further 5 hours to descend!

Kilimanjaro is no stranger to wacky records as well. Here is a trekker claiming to have hit the highest female golf shot. The record is not confirmed, but when it comes to Kilimanjaro sports like golf, cricket, football, rugby and even cycling have all made an appearance.
